Teeth whitening lightens the natural colour of the teeth. The clinic offers two routes: Zoom whitening, carried out in the clinic in a single appointment, and take-home whitening, using trays made for your teeth.
Whitening is carried out after an examination. Decay, gum problems or failing fillings are identified first, because whitening is not suitable until they are addressed.
Whitening changes natural tooth surfaces only. Crowns, veneers and fillings keep their existing shade, which the dentist takes into account when planning with you.
Whitening may suit adults with healthy teeth and gums whose teeth have darkened or stained over time.
It may not be suitable during pregnancy, with untreated decay or gum disease, or where sensitivity is already a concern. The dentist will discuss this at your examination.
Your teeth and gums are examined first and your current shade is recorded. The dentist explains the two routes, what each involves and the sensitivity that can follow.
Zoom whitening is carried out in a single appointment in the clinic. For take-home whitening, impressions or a scan are taken so that trays can be made for you, with instructions on how to use them. Individual results vary.
