Dental implants

Overview

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. A small post is placed in the jawbone and, once the site is ready, a crown, bridge or denture is fitted on top of it.

At Emerald Avenue Medical Clinic, implant treatment is led by a specialist prosthodontist with implantology privileges, so the surgical placement and the final restoration are planned together by the same team.

How implants are planned

Treatment is planned digitally before anything is carried out. Where it is clinically indicated, the clinic offers guided implant surgery, bone grafting and immediate loading. The plan is shown to you and explained before you agree to it.

From a single tooth to a full arch

Implants can replace a single tooth, support a bridge across several missing teeth, or anchor a full-mouth rehabilitation. Which route suits you is decided at your assessment.

Who it is for

Implants may suit adults with one or more missing teeth, or teeth that need to be removed, who would prefer a fixed replacement to a removable denture.

Suitability depends on your general health, the condition of your gums and the bone available in the jaw. Where bone is limited, grafting may be discussed. Where an implant is not the right option, the dentist will say so and set out the alternatives, such as a bridge or a denture.

What to expect

The first appointment is an examination. Your teeth, gums and bite are assessed, and X-rays or a scan are taken where they are needed.

The findings are then explained to you, along with the options open to you, the sequence treatment would follow and its risks. Nothing is carried out until you have agreed to the plan.

Please bring any recent dental X-rays or reports you hold, and tell the dentist about any medication you take.
